OCCIDENTAL ARTS AND ECOLOGY CENTER’S WATER INSTITUTE 2009 PUBLIC EDUCATION, ADVOCACY AND OUTREACH EFFORTS
The following is a listing of presentations given by the WATER Institute throughout the year. Each talk, including the Basins of Relations: Thinking Like A Watershed presentation is customized to address the unique ecological, land use and community issues associated with the watershed we are presenting in. We take into account the concerns of the constituency we are addressing and tailor these talks to meet the needs of this diverse array of communities (i.e. emphasizing urban storm water management strategies suited to urban environments vs. storm water strategies tailored to rural/agrarian land uses).
• Conservation Corps North Bay Training (Novato, CA): In January 2009, Brock gave a Thinking Like a Marin Watershed lecture to 30 AmeriCorps Naturalist Leadership trainees.
• KRCB Radio Sonoma Spotlight (Santa Rosa, CA): In January 2009, Roland Giacopetti interviewed Brock about the WATER Institute.
• Marin Environmental Forum (Larkspur, CA): In February 2009, Brock gave a Thinking Like a Marin Watershed talk to 40 trainees.
• Watershed Stewardship and the Tomales Bay Watershed Forum (Pt. Reyes Station, CA): In February 2009 Brock gave a presentation on Thinking Like a Tomales Bay Watershed to 150 participants. The talk was simultaneously translated into Spanish for the Spanish speaking attendees.
• State of California Department of Housing and Community Development (Sacramento, CA): In February 2009, Brock spoke to state officials at a California Plumbing Code Focus Group about the merits of amending the code to include graywater.
• .Napa Master Gardeners (Napa, CA): In February 2009, Brock gave a Thinking Like a Napa Watershed talk to 90 Master Gardeners.
• Maharishi University of Management of Fairfield, Iowa (Occidental, CA): In February 2009 Brock gave a Permaculture tour on the OAEC site to students from this university’s Sustainable Living program, a four year degree program with a curriculum based on permaculture design.
• Salmonid Restoration Federation Annual Conference (Santa Cruz, CA): In March 2009, Brock gave a presentation to 100 people entitled “Upland Rehydration Strategies: Slow It, Spread It & Sink It for Salmon.”
• Land Paths Stories About This Place (Occidental, CA): In March 2009, Brock spoke at this annual event that offers a hearty meal of story, humor and often poignant moments. Held this year near Land Paths' own Grove of Old Trees, it was an evening of musings from people who have spent years developing a “sense of place” in Sonoma County.
• Eco Green Real Estate Certification Program (Santa Rosa, CA): In March of 2009 Brock gave a Basins of Relations: Thinking Like A Watershed lecture to increase the watershed literacy of 80 real estate agents enrolled in an ecological training program.
• Napa Valley Rotary Club Meeting (Napa, CA): In April of 2009, Brock gave a presentation on Thinking Like A Napa Valley Watershed to 60 Rotarians.
• Storm Water Harvesting Workshop (Occidental, CA): In April 2009, the WATER Institute offered a workshop to 25 people focusing on preventing erosion problems before they occur, and turning storm water challenges into benefits.
• Roof Water Catchment Workshop (Occidental, CA): In April 2009 on behalf of the WATER Institute, Brock gave a half-day workshop to 45 people on roof water catchment design and installation.
• Sonoma Ecology Center’s Water Wisdom Forum (Sonoma, CA): In April, 2009, Brock gave a presentation on Thinking Like a Sonoma Creek Watershed to 30 participants as part of a series that seeks to educate citizens about how to protect watersheds and the water in them.
• Environmental Forum: Water Saving Opportunities for Sonoma County (Santa Rosa, CA): In April 2009, Brock gave a presentation on managing rainwater and graywater systems to an audience of 35 as part of this educational public forum.
• State of California Department of Housing and Community Development (Sacramento, CA): In April 2009, Brock spoke to state officials and legislators at a California Plumbing Code Focus Group about improving the proposed code revision.
• Rivers Of A Lost Coast film screening (Santa Rosa, CA): In April 2009, Brock was invited by filmmakers of this feature length film to speak to an audience of 200 about the WATER Institute and watershed conservation efforts occurring in Sonoma County.
• 2009 Napa County Watershed Symposium (Napa, CA): In May 2009, Brock gave a presentation on Perspectives on Watersheds for a symposium focused on stewarding Napa County’s Watersheds in a changing world.
• Heating Water With The Sun Workshop (Occidental, CA): In May 2009, Brock led a workshop on how a solar hot water system can greatly reduce energy bills while reducing one’s reliance on the non-renewable fossil fuels most commonly used to heat water.
• Keepers of the Waters Research Trip (Sichuan China & Tibet): In June 2009, Brock was invited to participate in a five weeklong field research trip on international water issues. During this time he made public presentations to 80 members of the Chengdu Urban Rivers Association and presented to 100 leaders at the International Conference on Sustainable Communities: Post Earthquake Reconstruction.
• Water Supply Planning And Land Use Meeting (Santa Rosa CA): In July 2009 Brock convened and facilitated this technical meeting for the members of the Sonoma County Water Coalition. Invited speakers were: Jay Jaspers of the Sonoma County Water Agency, Mark Brammfit of The Valley of the Moon Water District and Bill Keene of the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District.
• Roof Water Catchment Workshop (Occidental, CA): In August 2009 on behalf of the WATER Institute, Brock gave a half-day workshop on roof water catchment design and installation.
• Clear Channel Radio Interview (San Francisco, CA): In August 2009 Brock was interviewed by Helge Hellberg for his “An Organic Conversation” show which has a listening audience of over 80,000.
• Compton Gateway: Symposium for Creekside Community Development (Compton, CA): In September 2009 Brock gave the keynote address on Thinking Like A Compton Watershed to 75 elected officials, agency staff from the cities of Compton, Los Angeles, Lynwood and South Gate; the County of Los Angeles; state and federal agencies and business, community and environmental leaders.
• Rain & Graywater-fed Urban Oasis Tour (Petaluma, CA): In September 2009 Brock discussed the importance of water conservation, water reuse and effective runoff management to 25 attendees of this ever popular Daily Acts tour series.
• Beads On A Green Necklace: Green Streets/Resilient Watersheds Tour (El Cerrito, CA): In October 2009 Brock will present to city planners, public works directors and city, county and state officials on the importance of permeable watersheds to urban environments.
• Bioneers Conference (San Rafael, CA): In October 2009, Brock was given the prestigious honor of being invited to give a plenary presentation entitled “Basins of Relations: A Reverential Rehydration Revolution.” This talk was viewed live by over 10,000 viewers and then made available on the web and on DVD.
• Bioneers Conference (San Rafael, CA): In October 2009, Brock, alongside Darren Doherty, gave an afternoon presentation entitled “Rehydration Revolution: Hydrological and Carbon Farming” to over 300 participants.
• Bioneers Conference (Occidental, CA): In October 2009, Brock led the Natural Magic - Permaculture Workshop and Biodiversity Gardens Post Conference Tour at OAEC to 25 participants.
• Earth Action Mentors Permi Radio Show (Palo Alto, CA): In October 2009, Brock gave a one hour talk on Basins of Relations in Permaculture on this call in radio show.
• The Santa Clara County Creeks Coalition Creek and Watershed Conference (Cupertino, CA): In November 2009, Brock gave a Basins of Relations: Thinking Like a Santa Clara Watershed presentation to 100 conference attendees.
• Rainwater Catchment and Water Conservation Workshop (Bodega, CA): In November 2009, Brock presented on rainwater catchment strategies to 40 participants as part of the Salmon Creek Water Conservation Program’s Bodega Pilot Project.
• Green New Deal for the North Bay Forum (Santa Rosa, CA): In November, 2009, Brock sat on a panel in which he spoke about water issues in Sonoma and Marin Counties to 30 people.
• Leadership Institute for Ecology & The Economy Training Program (Santa Rosa, CA): In December 2009, Brock gave a Basins of Relations: Thinking Like a Sonoma County Watershed talk to trainees enrolled in this program.
• Call of Life Film Screening and Presentation (Mill Valley, CA): In December 2009, Brock will give talk to attendees of this fundraising event for this feature length documentary film that includes an interview of him.
