Event: Basins of Relations: Thinking like a Salmon Creek Watershed - A Brock Dolman presentation to benefit the Grove of Old Trees
Offered: Friday July 9, 2010
Time: 7:00 PM
Location: Salmon Creek School, 1935 Bohemian Hwy, Occidental, CA
An in depth look at water and watersheds with Occidental Arts and Ecology Center biologist and educator, Brock Dolman
Brock will share a series of slide images and interpretation about redwoods, old growth forests, water, watersheds, human development patterns and restoration ideas that support regenerative ecological integrity and instream flows for salmonids and societies. Water is the ‘element of life' on Planet Water and the conservation of native ecosystems swimming, crawling, flying and walking with biodiversity is absolutely dependent upon hydrologically intact watersheds.
Brock will discuss rainwater harvesting as a strategy of water conservation, both as practiced by Redwoods at the Grove of the Old Trees down to your own roof. Speaker will expand on ideas of "Conservation Hydrology" and Low Impact Development, which emphasizes the need in many areas for human development designs to move from drainage to retain-age. He will highlight many of the exciting examples of this work being implemented in the Salmon Creek Watershed.

Friends of the Grove (FOG), a chapter of LandPaths, is a volunteer group dedicated to stewarding and caring for the Grove of Old Trees. The Grove is owned and managed by LandPaths, a local non-profit dedicated to fostering a love of the land and encouraging public access to wild lands.
This 28 acre site, situated at the top of the Salmon Creek Watershed, is wooded in rare and lovely old growth redwoods and is inhabited by a myriad of forest critters, from tiny bats to Great Horned owls. The Grove is a vibrant ecosystem that seems to have miraculously escaped logging and other development. Thanks to the many activists, neighbors, and concerned citizens that worked to preserve the Grove, life will continue to thrive among the trees and visitors will be able to enjoy the beauty of the forest forever.
The Grove of Old Trees is open for walking and picnicking any day of the year. In fact, the Grove is the only privately-owned wild land preserve in Sonoma County that is publicly accessible and free to all.
