The Seven Named Pesticides To Be Avoided
The following is a list of the seven pesticides that require EPA point-of-sale warning signs when sold in any store located in Cotati, Graton, Healdsburg, Petaluma, Rohnert Park, Santa Rosa, Sebastopol, or Windsor as required by a 2004 court injunction.
2,4-D -- Herbicide found in: Crossbow, Barrage, Lawn-Keep, Lilly Miller Lawn Weed Killer, Salvo, Savage, Scotts Turfbuilder Plus 2, Spectracide Spot Weed Killer, Trimec, Weed & Feed, Weed B Gon, Weed Stop, and Weedone. Used on broadleaf weeds and can be highly toxic to fish. It’s unknown if it causes cancer, but it has been demonstrated that it causes reproductive effects, neuro-toxicity, kidney damage, liver damage, endocrine disruption, birth defects, sensitivity, and irritation.
Carbaryl -- Insecticide found in: Adios, Bug B Gon Granules, Bug Geta Plus, Bugmaster, Corry's Bug Bait, Green Light Bug Bait, Septene, Sevin, Snail Slug & Bug Killer, and Snail Slug & Insect Granules. Moderately toxic to aquatic life. Likely to cause cancer. It has been demonstrated that it causes reproductive effects, neuro-toxicity, kidney damage, liver damage, endocrine disruption, birth defects, sensitivity, and irritation.
Diazinon -- Insecticide found in: Gardentox, Knox Out, and Spectracide. Kills cockroaches, ants, and fleas. Highly toxic to fish.
Diuron -- Herbicide found in: Direx and Karmex. Used on mosses and broadleaf and grassy weeds. Moderately toxic to fish and highly toxic to aquatic invertebrates.
Malathion -- Insecticide found in: Celthion, Fyfanon, and Maltox. Kills mosquitoes, flies, and lice. Can be highly toxic to fish. Data suggests that it causes cancer, and it is suspected that it causes endocrine disruption. It has been demonstrated that it causes reproductive effects, neuro-toxicity, kidney damage, liver damage, birth defects, sensitivity, and irritation.
Triclopyr BEE -- Herbicide found in: Access, Crossbow, Garlon, and Redeem. Used on woody and broadleaf plants. Low toxicity for fish. It is unknown if it causes cancer, but it has been demonstrated that it causes reproductive effects, kidney damage, liver damage, birth defects, sensitivity, and irritation.
Trifluralin -- Herbicide found in: Preen, Preen & Green, Scotts Garden Weed Preventer, Trefanocide, Treficon, and Trust. Kills annual grasses and broadleaf weeds. Highly toxic to fish and other aquatic organisms. It is a possible cause of cancer and a probable cause of endocrine disruption. It has been demonstrated that it causes reproductive effects, kidney damage, liver damage, sensitivity, and irritation.
